The Cords of light project was the birth of the Tubes as a modular installation concept.
I was commissioned to make a work for the Janskerk in Utrecht as a part of their jubilee celebrations.
I had come up with the Noodles (see work 04) shortly before getting the request and wanted to bring their energy into the church. Though knowing how big the church was I obviously had to find a way to magnify the Noodles.

Nowadays I do regard the Tubes and the Noodles as two separate artistic building blocks within my arsenal with their own peculiarities and uses but they still are in a lot of ways connected. They are both magnified strings.

The Cords of light are string hanging in the church but beyond that they are string from the church as well. I have made them out of textile donations from the church, old fabrics, and most notably old clothing from the church community have been torn apart and put together in a completely new way in order to make this work happen.

And that history for having belonged to a whole community keeps informing the Tubes project. I am still working with donations but more than that I now also ask people to join in the making of the tubes. Making them a communal art project that anyone can join.
